Every Clone Battalion in Star Wars

Every clone trooper in the Grand Army of the Republic belonged to a unit, from the famous 501st Legion and 212th Attack Battalion to the small companies and squads that only turn up for a single battle. This is every major named clone unit from the films, The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, with the Jedi and clone officers who led them, where you can see them on screen, and the action figures Hasbro has made of each one.

The units are grouped under the larger unit they belonged to, so you can see how the army fitted together. Where I have the figure in my own Vintage Collection, the photo is from my collection.

Bossk’s Bounty is compensated for any purchases made through any eBay or Amazon links that may appear below.

How the clone army was organised

The whole clone army was called the Grand Army of the Republic. It was built in layers, and almost every layer was four of the one below it:

Unit Made up of Clone troopers With officers Led by
Squad   9 10 A clone sergeant
Platoon 4 squads 36 41 A clone lieutenant
Company 4 platoons 144 165 A clone captain
Battalion 4 companies 576 660 A Jedi General or a clone commander
Regiment 4 battalions 2,304 2,641 A Jedi Commander or a clone commander
Legion 4 regiments 9,216 10,564 A Jedi General or a clone commander
Corps 4 legions 36,864 42,257 A Jedi General and a clone marshal commander
Sector Army 4 corps 147,456 169,028 The most senior Jedi, such as members of the Jedi High Council
Systems Army 2 sector armies 294,912 338,056 A High Jedi General
Grand Army 10 systems armies 2,949,120 3,380,560 Supreme Chancellor Palpatine

The higher you go, the more senior the Jedi in charge: sector armies were reserved for the most senior Jedi, such as members of the Jedi High Council, and the whole army answered to Chancellor Palpatine. There were also brigades, which had no fixed size and were led by a Jedi officer.

The names of the famous units don’t always tell you their size. The 501st is a legion, the 212th a battalion and the 327th a corps.

How many clone battalions are there?

On paper, a full Grand Army of the Republic would have had 5,120 battalions, 320 legions and 80 corps. That’s 2,949,120 clone troopers divided into battalions of 576.

In practice, the army never reached that size. The war began with about 1.2 million clones, 192,000 of whom fought at the First Battle of Geonosis, and another 5 million were ordered during the war. Only a few dozen units are ever named on screen, and they’re all on this page.

Every clone battalion and unit in Star Wars

501st Legion

The most famous clone unit of all. The 501st was led by Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, his Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex, and its troopers wore white armour with blue markings. They were known for their courage and their unconventional tactics.

The 501st began the war as a battalion and grew into a legion. When Order 66 came, Commander Appo led half of the 501st into the Jedi Temple behind Anakin, now Darth Vader, and it went on to serve the Empire as the 501st, nicknamed “Vader’s Fist”, as the clones gave way to stormtroopers.

332nd Company (501st)

Formed for the Siege of Mandalore at the end of the war. When Ahsoka asked for help retaking Mandalore from Maul, Rex, by then a commander, formed a new company of 501st troopers to go with her. Ahsoka had left the Jedi Order, so Rex was officially in command with her as an adviser, but the troopers followed her anyway and painted their helmets to match her face markings.

When Order 66 came, on the way back to Coruscant, the company turned on Ahsoka. Rex fought off his own troopers to protect her, Jesse among them.

  • Where you see them: The Clone Wars season 2, “Cargo of Doom”

212th Attack Battalion

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s battalion, with Commander Cody as his second in command. Its troopers wore white armour with orange markings, and it was part of a larger unit, the 7th Sky Corps, which Kenobi and Cody also led.

The 212th fought at Christophsis, Teth and Ryloth, and in the Second Battle of Geonosis. On Utapau, at the end of Revenge of the Sith, it was Cody who received Order 66 and ordered an AT-TE to fire on Kenobi.

  • Where you see them: throughout The Clone Wars, and in Revenge of the Sith on Utapau

The 104th’s troopers first wore maroon markings on their Phase I armour. After the battalion lost so many clones at the Battle of Abregado, they changed to flint grey or blue-grey to honour the fallen. The 104th fought throughout the war, including at Kadavo, in the mission to rescue Togruta held by Zygerrian slavers. Wolffe survived Order 66 and turns up years later in Star Wars Rebels.

41st Elite Corps

Led by Jedi General Luminara Unduli and Commander Gree, with Yoda also leading it at times. The 41st, also called the 41st Elite Legion, fought across the galaxy in The Clone Wars, and it belonged to a larger unit, the 9th Assault Corps. Its troopers wore several colour schemes: olive or light green markings, grey markings and green camouflage. The grey-marked troopers are the ones you see in Revenge of the Sith, assembling on a Coruscant landing platform before leaving for Kashyyyk, and the green camouflage belongs to its scout battalion, below.

One battalion of the 41st was led by Depa Billaba, with her Padawan Caleb Dume (the future Kanan Jarrus) and Captain Grey, and fought on Kaller at the end of the war. That’s where the first episode of The Bad Batch begins.

  • Where you see them: The Clone Wars (“Rookies”, “Cloak of Darkness” and more), Revenge of the Sith on Coruscant and Kashyyyk, and The Bad Batch (“Aftermath”)
  • The figures: VC43 Commander Gree, in his Kashyyyk camouflage, VC145 41st Elite Corps Clone Trooper, the grey-marked trooper from the Coruscant landing platform, and VC209 Clone Captain Grey, in The Vintage Collection. 21st Nova Corps (Galactic Marines)

The Galactic Marines were the corps of Ki-Adi-Mundi, one of the most powerful Jedi on the Council, with Marshal Commander Bacara as his second in command. They wore their own variant of Phase II armour, with a helmet designed to filter out pollutants, and they were known for how relentless they were in combat. On Mygeeto, when Order 66 came through, Bacara’s marines turned on Ki-Adi-Mundi and killed him.

91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps

A reconnaissance corps whose vehicles included BARC speeders, led by Jedi General Adi Gallia and Marshal Commander Neyo. Mace Windu also commanded it, and Commander Ponds served under him. Late in the war, Stass Allie and Oppo Rancisis took command for the Siege of Saleucami. Neyo was stationed there under Stass Allie, and on Order 66 he turned his BARC speeder’s cannons on her.

  • Where you see them: The Clone Wars (the Ryloth episodes, “The Zillo Beast” and more), Revenge of the Sith on Saleucami

Coruscant Guard

The clones who guarded the capital. The Coruscant Guard served as a military police force under Commander Fox, protecting government buildings and helping the police patrol the streets of Coruscant. As the war went on, it took over from the Senate Guard as bodyguards to senators and the Chancellor. Fox’s troopers were at the centre of some of the show’s darkest moments: when Fives uncovered the plot behind the clones’ inhibitor chips and went on the run, it was Fox who tracked him down and shot him.

  • Where you see them: throughout The Clone Wars, Revenge of the Sith and The Bad Batch
  • Famous members: Commander Fox, Commander Thire, Commander Stone
  • The figures: VC374 Imperial Shock Trooper (2025, pictured), based on The Clone Wars, and the older VC110 Shock Trooper from Revenge of the Sith, both with red markings, in The Vintage Collection, and Clone Commander Fox (GameStop) in The Black Series

442nd Siege Battalion

Plo Koon’s second unit, with Commander Verd as second in command. The 442nd specialised in sieges, wore green markings and fought with AT-RTs and Infantry Support Platforms. At the end of the war it was sent to besiege Cato Neimoidia, and Plo Koon was flying over the planet to coordinate the siege when his wingmate, Captain Jag, shot him down on Order 66.

The “Iron” Battalion, led by Jedi Master Jaro Tapal and his Padawan, Cal Kestis. It fought in the Bracca Invasion, and its troopers wore yellow markings. On Order 66, the clones turned on Tapal and Cal aboard their Star Destroyer, the Albedo Brave. Tapal was killed, Cal escaped, and the battalion and the ship were destroyed.

Home to elite ARC troopers, including Commanders Colt, Blitz, Havoc and Hammer, who oversaw the training of clone cadets on Kamino. Its ARC troopers wore their own colour schemes, and the battalion’s troopers had maroon and grey-blue markings. Flame trooper corps

Clones in insulated armour, armed with flamethrowers. The first version of their armour didn’t filter the air properly, and the improved Mark II “Hotspot” armour was a big morale boost. Flame troopers fought in the Second Battle of Geonosis under Ki-Adi-Mundi and Commander Jet.

  • Where you see them: The Clone Wars season 2 (“Landing at Point Rain”, “Weapons Factory”)

The clone engineers, who kept tanks, turbolasers and other heavy machinery running and supported the artillery. Engineers from the battalion, led by Obi-Wan, Ahsoka and Sergeant Gaffa, fought aboard the freighter Twilight, where they took parts from a broken tank and built a missile platform to win the fight. The battalion was part of the 38th Armored Division, stationed on Kashyyyk under Yoda.

Known from a vision, not a battle. As a Padawan, Dooku had a vision of the future in which Jedi Master Jor Aerith led the 184th with Commander Crane, and the battalion was in the middle of a battle when Order 66 came. It’s one of the first hints in the story of what the clones would do.

Clone Force 99 (The Bad Batch)

Strictly a squad rather than a battalion, but no list of clone units is complete without them. Clone Force 99 was a special forces squad of clones with deliberate genetic mutations: Hunter, the leader, with enhanced senses; Wrecker, with enhanced strength; Tech, with enhanced intelligence; Crosshair, the marksman; and Echo, rescued on Skako Minor and left with cybernetic implants. Their mutations made their inhibitor chips less effective, so they were able to disobey Order 66, at least at first. Crosshair’s was the only one seen working.

Collecting the clone battalions

If you want to build a clone army on your shelf, Hasbro has covered most of the famous units in both of its main lines. The 501st, the 212th, the 104th, the 41st, the 332nd and the Bad Batch have all had several figures, while the 327th, the Galactic Marines and the 187th are mostly found in The Black Series.

All of the figures on this page are listed in my Vintage Collection checklist and my Black Series checklist, and the gunships that carried them into battle are in my guide to every Hasbro Republic Gunship.
